HINDUISM PILGRIMAGES
The major religion of India is one of the oldest living religions in the world. Evolving in India where 83% of the population is Hindu. Hinduism in India affects family life, food, dress and architecture. The caste system as applied to Hindus determines their way of life and often even their occupations. With traveling becoming easier as each day passes Hindus have settled throughout the world and have taken their faith with them. Today Hinduism is found in many countries, the Hindu literature and philosophy have influenced people throughout the world. Pilgrimage or Tirthatan is the oldest way of traveling from one place to other in India. From the first instance of civilization to the present day, millions of Hindus leave their home in search of salvation. The destination could be any place with a legend attached. From the high hills of Himalayas to small islands in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal and from the fertile plains of Northern India to the Southern Peninsula, Hindu pilgrimage centers are in thousands and multiplying.
INDIAN FOLK AND TRIBAL DANCES
Indian folk and tribal dances are simple , and performed to express joy. Folk dances are performed for every possible occasion, to celebrate the arrival of seasons, birth of a child, a wedding and festivals. The dances are extremely simple with minimum of steps or movement. The dances burst with verve and vitality. Men and women perform some dances exclusively, while in some performances men and women dance together. On most occasions, the dancers sing themselves, while being accompanied by artists on the instruments. Each form of dance has a specific costume. Most costumes are flamboyant with extensive jewels. The northeast part of the country is the home for over 60 tribes. Each tribe has its own range of tribal dances. The exciting dances of the Nagas and the Bihus of Assam, are performed to celebrate spring and harvesting. The chief folk dance of Gujarat, the Dandiya, is performed using sticks. Each performer holds two sticks, which they strike alternately to the right and left while the group dances. They also move diagonally, clockwise, anti-clockwise, as they strike the sticks. The Bhangra dance of Punjab is performed by men, to the rhythm of the drum. The dance includes a wide range of leaps and jumps. Dancers stand on each other's shoulder while dancing to the music. There are hundreds of Indian folk and tribal dances. Each region of India has its own folk dance. Both men and women perform the bamboo dance of Mizoram. While the men hold the bamboo, the women folk dance between the bamboo. In this performance, the sound of the bamboo hitting each other is the rhythm. Though dangerous if a rhythm is missed, these experienced dancers perform with grace and with care. In the south, the dummy horse dance or the Poikalkuthirai, is very famous. Dancers fit dummy legs to their legs and dance to the tune of the music. Both men and women perform this form of art. In Tamil Nadu, dancers place a karagam or a decorated jug, on their head and dance while balancing the karagam. While there are numerous folk and tribal dances, they are constantly improved. The skill and the imagination of the dances influence the performance.

WAS IST BOLLYWOOD?
Bollywood" - zusammengesetzt aus Bombay (Indien) und Hollywood , ist ein Kosename für eine Filmgattung und für Musik, die Jahr für Jahr Millionen Pfund einspielt. Fast alle westlichen Filmprofessionellen wissen, dass es sich bei indischen Kommerzproduktionen um unerträglichen "Kitsch" handelt , auch wenn ihr nie im Leben einen jener Filme gesehen habt, in denen angeblich nur gesungen und getanzt wird. Dem indischen Filmvertrieb kann diese Ignoranz egal sein. Den Schaden hat das westliche Publikum, dem seit Jahrzehnten viele herrliche Filme vorenthalten werden. Beeindruckt vom Glanz und vom Reichtum von Indiens größter Filmstadt kommen jeden Tag kommen Tausende von jungen Menschen nach Bombay (Mumbai). Alle möchten als Filmschauspieler berühmt werden, so wie ihre Vorbilder, welche an jeder Straßenecke von den Hauswänden lachen. Indiens Medien sind täglich voll mit Berichten und Fotos über die Bildschirm- und Leinwandhelden. Selbst auf New Delhis Indira Ghandi International Airport begleiten die typischen indischen Filme die Passagiere zum Flugzeug oder im Restaurant. Ein Knopfdruck genügt und der Raum füllt sich mit dem besonderen Sound der Hindi-Filme. Diese Filme sind eine einzigartige Mischung aus Musik-, Tanz- und Liebesfilm, starkt gewürzt mit viel Schmalz, Reichtum, Kampfszenen und natürlich menschlicher und landschaftlicher Schönheit. Fast alle Bollywood-Filme sind Musicals, und die meisten von ihnen werden von Leuten synchronisiert, die sich als Play-back-Sänger einen Namen gemacht haben; die tollen Helden und die drallen Heldinnen des Films sind oft nicht imstande, auch nur eine einzige Note selbst zu singen. Die indische Filmindustrie produziert jedes Jahr ungefähr 800 Filme, und jeder Film hat seinen eigenen Soundtrack. Wen wundert es da, dass es sich bei Bollywood-Musik um Big Business handelt? Interessant ist hierbei, dass diese Soundtracks im Unterschied zu westlicher Filmmusik über Erfolg und Misserfolg eines Filmes entscheiden können. Wenn der Soundtrack eines Films zu einem Flop wird, dann ist es fast sicher, dass der Film dieses Schicksal teilen wird. Filmproduzenten und Regisseure sorgen dafür, dass die besten Komponisten und die beliebtesten Sänger engagiert werden. Sie wissen sehr genau, dass der Erfolg ihrer Filme ebenso von denen abhängt, die singen und komponieren, wie von den so extrem glamourös agierenden Schauspielern und Schauspielerinnen. Bollywood-Musik ist in ihrem Ursprungsland schon immer populär gewesen. Geht man in einer der größeren Städte Indiens über die Straße, dann kann man fast sicher sein, Songs aus einem der neuesten supererfolgreichen Filme aus einem Autoradio und aus Basars plärren zu hören. In den vergangenen Jahren ist der Bollywood-Virus auch auf den Westen übergesprungen und hat dort ein Fieber ausgelöst -- und dies nicht nur bei den in Großbritannien lebenden Asiaten. Bollywood-Filme lassen britische Kinokassen immer häufiger klingeln und übertreffen bereits amerikanische Spitzenfilme. Einige Streifen, wie zum Beispiel der Film Lagaan (die Geschichte eines kleinen Dorfes im Viktorianischen Indien, das seine Zukunft von einem Kricketspiel gegen die britischen Herrscher abhängig macht), wurden speziell für den Überseemarkt produziert und spielen vor überfüllten Kinosälen in Großbritannien. Die Musik dieser Filme stößt überall vielleicht deswegen auf so große Sympathien, weil sie sich bei so vielen anderen Gattungen bedient . Traditionelle indische Instrumente wie Tablas und Sitars werden häufig neben Gitarren, Synthesizern und Violinen gespielt. Die Bollywood-Musik erreicht ihre einmalige Eigenart dadurch, dass sie imstande ist, so viele verschiedene musikalische Varianten in sich zu vereinigen.
